The short film is the story of a successful and popular young businessman. He is always proud of the large number of fans on social networks as well as the affection, idols from friends, family and colleagues. When an eye-catching ad appeared on the screen: "Do you like to USE rhino horn?", He chose "LIKE" because he thought it was "very fashionable". Immediately, the number of his followers decreased rapidly until there was no one left - positive changes showed changes in public awareness about the use of rhino horn. Unpopular, he became depressed, lonely and in pain realizing that today's society no longer advocates the use of rhino horn.
Vietnam is considered a transshipment country and a major market for rhino horn in the world. For many years, a small number of people still blindly believe in rhino horn's panacea's use. At the same time, economic development has led to an increase in the number of people who use rhino horn as a way of showing class or as a luxury gift to strengthen business relationships. These misleading views have boosted the demand for rhino horn in Vietnam.
In 2010, Vietnam's last rhino was killed for its horn. However, domestic demand for rhino horn continues to be the cause of the rhino massacre in Africa. It also stimulates rhino horn hunting and trafficking by many criminal networks operating freely around the globe, such as that of Nguyen Mau Chien, who is suspected of leading illegal rhino horn trade. sense, ivory from Africa to Vietnam.
In 2017, 1,028 rhino individuals were killed in South Africa for their horns. Although this figure has decreased by 26 individuals compared to 2016, it is much higher than 10 years ago (about 13 rhinos were killed in 2007). That means an average of 3 rhino killed every day, alarming the serious decline in the number of rhino populations in this country. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), if illegal hunting continues to increase, rhinos are at risk of extinction by 2026.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuong Dung, Deputy Director of ENV expressed concern: “Should we feel proud to use rhino horn if knowing that this very thought is pushing a magical creature to the brink of extinction? and enrich those who profit unjustly from destroying our own biodiversity? ”
Ms. Dung called upon the community to join hands to end this cruel rhino massacre: “We Vietnamese citizens need to share our responsibility with the world in protecting the remaining rhino individuals. It is time for us to eliminate baseless rumors about the use of rhino horn and call for efforts to protect and restore rhino populations in the wild. ”
ENV calls on the community not to use rhino horn; spreading rhino protection messages to people around; eradicating blind notions about rhino horn as a panacea or a luxury gift. ENV also called on people to report violations of the rhino horn trade to ENV authorities or the hotline 1800-1522 hotline.
Short films will be broadcast on central and local television channels in Vietnam in the near future. Viewers can also watch online at ENV's YouTube channel.
ENV would like to thank the support of the Save the Rhino International, the International Rhino Foundation, the Oak Foundation and the US Fish and Wildlife Service. (United States Fish and Wildlife Service) in producing this short film. ENV also thanks Vietnam Television, local television channels, MobiTV, VTC digital television and Sen Media Company for broadcasting and helping spread the rhino protection message to millions of people around the world.
