The demand for bear bile is the main cause of bear bile farming in Vietnam, threatening the wild bear population. Many Vietnamese still believe that bear bile is a panacea and choose to use bear bile instead of modern remedies, which are affordable and highly effective.

Over the past 13 years, a group of bear NGOs has been assisting government authorities and has made significant achievements in efforts to end bear farming through strengthening law enforcement and monitoring of bear captive facilities; Improve policy institutions and reduce the need for bear bile use. As of October 2018, the number of captive bears across the country was only about 800 individuals, a significant reduction compared to the number of more than 4,300 individuals kept in captivity in hundreds of facilities discovered in 2005. and demand for bear bile has decreased significantly. According to an ENV study published in 2015, the demand for bear bile has decreased by 61% compared to 2009. Many bear owners have also abandoned bear farming and voluntarily transferred their own bear bears. to the rescue center this year. These are positive signs that Vietnam will soon end the situation of keeping bear captive for bile in the near future.

According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuong Dung, Deputy Director of ENV: “Bear bile is no longer suitable for modern society. Even so, we still have a lot of work to be done to completely eradicate this regressive bear captive activity. ”

Ms. Dung encourages the community to join hands in protecting bears with practical actions:

• Notify the advertising, trade in bear bile and bear products to local authorities or ENV 1800-1522 wildlife protection hotline;
• Encourage people around them not to use bear bile and bear products;
